Beer and cryogenics…really? The story goes like this…how much vacuum is enough for either?  It completely depends your application.

  • Liposuction can work with 300 Torr (e.g., half atmospheric pressure)
  • Diesel fuel lift pumps work somewhere between 1 and 20 inches of mercury.
  • Some coating applications require 1 x 10-6 Torr.

In the Cryogenic industry, vacuum is used as an insulator, similar to the way you would use a styrofoam cooler to keep your favorite beer cold on a hot day.  Cryogenic applications work between 10mTorr and 100mTorr, making the Digivac Model 100H the ideal gauge for cryogenic applications.  We recently wrote an Application Note for Scientific Cryogenic, discussing this in more detail.

Mean free path is not only interesting science, but illustrates why thermocouple gauges are ideal sensors for measuring the pressure in a vacuum jacket. Cheers to accurate vaccum measurement and keeping your beer cold!  Contact us to see how we can meet your vaccum measurement needs.
